out of four black families rent versus three out of four white families own. So, what do we do? It benefits us to work together to resolve our differences and create a win-win local and regional landscape economically, educationally, and socially. We are all connected as a quote of Martin Luther King, Jr. reminds us, “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.” Instead of being overwhelmed by the enormity of the gap challenges, the MUL seeks to collaborate across geographic divides in pursuit of solutions and actions with such groups as the Business Alliance. To combat transportation issues for example, MUL is partnering with a local transit company to offer individuals at a nominal cost from Milwaukee, rides to and from work locations in outlying areas that have inadequate public transportation. The service will also be available to students from one of MUL’s partner high schools, and graduates of MUL’s GED + Career Pathway program, offered in partnership with MATC. MUL looks forward to working more closely with MMAC’s Region of Choice for Diverse Talent Initiative designed to increase the number of management positions held by people of color resulting in more earnings above the $40,000 annual wage. Through our Financial Opportunity Center, MUL plans to partner with banks and others to increase opportunities for homeownership of underrepresented communities and support to small businesses. MMAC suggests in one of its reports to “leverage our assets and reduce our liabilities.” Wisconsin has many assets and opportunities through its committed leaders across the board. I say let us work together as a region with intentionality to realize our full potential and create avenues to increase the number of individuals enjoying a good quality of life.
