Visit our website for more information on our impact inWaukesha County, and learn how to get involved! What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career? Planning and practice, no matter what level you are at. It is important to think projects through to the end in order to plan properly. I have learned how important it is to communicate ideas and gain feedback along the way in order to make a change and successfully introduce new ideas or processes. What is your personal key to success? Relationships. I have always had a relationship-centric focus on my work and leadership style. I recently heard leadership coach Denise Thomas say, “Your network is your net worth” and it is so true. You are only one person, and those around you want to help make the community a better place. I’m also not afraid to ask for donations. Fundraising is an essential element to making an impact in the community. What’s the first job you ever had? Sandwich Artist at Subway. What is your dream job? I am in it! Ever since I volunteered on the build site, I dreamt of leading an affiliate one day. Nothing is better than building a house with volunteers and ultimately the family making it their forever home, who never would have been able to the traditional way. What book are you currently reading or would you recommend? "Dare to Lead" by Brene Brown. What is something unique about you? I moved a lot growing up. My Dad worked for a large manufacturing company with major operations in Brookfield at one time. We lived in different parts of Wisconsin and five other states, moving us around every 3-5 years. I attended Marquette University and that was the longest I had lived anywhere. I loved the greater Milwaukee area and wanted to make it my home. I even recruited my husband, David, to move here from Chicago. What are your favorite pastimes? Running, biking, and cross-country skiing. • MELISSA SONGCO CEO, Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha County EXECUTIVE PROFILE WAUKESHA COUNTY BUSINESS ALLIANCE, INC. | WAUKESHA.ORG 26
