What is the hardest part about being in the trades? I get a lot of satisfaction of knowing I put in a solid day’s work. One of the hardest parts of my job is when a machine goes down. There’s nothing I can do but wait for it to be repaired. That can be frustrating. One of my mentors taught me to be more self-sufficient when it comes to problems with machines. If you’re having trouble with a machine, just step back and consider what might be the problem. It could be something small, like maybe you forgot to calibrate the machine. Machines might seem complicated, but most of the time, they are less complicated than people. What’s your favorite part about your job? I’m like a kid in a playground. I like to have fun at work. It’s a great feeling when you know you’re giving your all and pumping out great parts. It’s a great feeling knowing that you’re making the process easier for the next guy. It is rewarding being part of a bigger operation, meeting the needs of our customers. What would you say to someone who wants to get involved with the trades? There is always an opportunity to learn and grow. Just as mentors were important to me early in my career, it’s important for each of us to mentor others as well. Communication is key, whether you’re learning a new role or sharing information with others. Ask a lot of questions and take notes. Don’t be shy. We need to communicate with each other every step of the way. We need to keep each other safe and continually learn from each other. Where do you see yourself going in the future? I’m open to learning everything and anything. As I see opportunities to expand my skills and my role, I’ll pursue them. I’d love to be a welder or serve as a leader. The sky is the limit. • Mayor Shawn Reilly and Otis Carolina attend Eaton's Badger Drive groundbreaking.
